We had a great Day Trip from Lisbon to Troia and Comporta recently.
Often people ask what they can do while in Lisbon, and skipping the crowded spots and the tourist traps, this is a wonderful day tour to see the outskirts of Lisbon, passing by Serra da Arrabida, Setubal, crossing the river by boat, having lunch at the golf in Troia and some horse ridding on the beach in Comporta. So much things to see here, it’s funny for families with children, couples and any others! And everything is close by.
The trip started by car from Lisbon, towards Setubal. In Setubal there is a ferry boat that can transport your car (recommended) to the other side of the river. Departs every our and costs around 20EUR for two (car included). Views are amazing, and a very relaxing river cross. If you are fortunate enough, you may have a chance to see the local dolphins swimming in Sado river.
After arriving at Troia (approx 50min), if you have your own car, you have two options: going to Troia and have lunch at any restaurant by the Marina, of start heading south towards Comporta. In Comporta there are very good/famous beach restaurants, specially Sal and Museu do Arroz. But my recommendation is in fact right outside Troia, on the right side there is the Troia Golf Restaurant. It’s very quiet, with lots of gardens and lakes, and the food is delicious. I’m not a golfer but the place was simply awesome! The meal should be less than 50EUR for two with a glass of wine.
After lunch, you can either take a quick visit to the beach. In case it’s summer and it’s warm, there are several good beaches 15min south around Comporta area. Praia do Pego and Praia da Comporta are two great choices. Small waves, good do swim, and often desert beaches.
But if you like adventure, why not go for a horse ridding on the beach? Even for someone who never did, they have very minimal requirements and it’s suitable for any kind of person, kids included. They go very slow along the coastal line, and their staff will help you learning in few minutes how to ride a horse. You can contact Cavalos na Areia through their website here: http://www.cavalosnaareia.com/ and costs around 50EUR per person for 1h30min ride on the beach.
At the end of the day, you can either return to Lisbon using the same way, or go all straight by highway through Alcacer and A2. Up to you. For this program, having a car is totally recommended.
