Lombok was from the first time on our plans when visiting Bali. Important to bear is that you need time for everything. The island looks small but you take time from one place to the other, roads are usually not in the best condition, you need to hire a driver or drive yourself, and you don’t know the roads.
I went to Lombok on my trip to Bali for 4 nights, and even a lot have been missed. Could only see a small portion of the island, mostly on the west coast. Rented a scooter for few days to explore around.
We took a flight from Bali Denpasar to Lombok Mataram using Garuda Airlines. You can also fly with Lion Air or Wings Air. It’s a short flight, less than 30min, and should cost around 40EUR roundtrip. There’s also the option by sea, taking a ferry or a speedboat from the coast of Bali.
Some other people take a day trip from Bali to see the Gili Islands in Lombok, it’s also a great choice, specially when you have very limited time and cannot afford spending too much exploring Lombok for several days.
Places not to be missed and things to do in Lombok are the following:
1) The Gili islands:
Gili Trawangan, the main island, Gili Meno and Gili Air and the famous islands of Lombok. Popular for scuba diving, and for daytrips, they have also plenty of hotels to stay.
2) Explore the island on a motorcycle/motorbike:
This is by far the best way to explore the island. The rental is extremely cheap, you usually can rent from the hotel, and gas is available on every small village, people sell it on the road for one dollar or less.
3) Mount Rinjani:
The second biggest vulcano of Indonesia with 3626m, is a must-see attraction in Lombok and one of it’s highlights. There are several guides tours available that will take you there for a hike. It’s not recommended only one day, but between 2-3 days for this visit.
Here are located most of the hotels and some nice beaches. There’s also plenty of restaurants and shops around the area. If staying here, I recommend Jeeva Klui Luxury Resort, north of Senggigi, pretty much away from the noise.
5) Pusuk Monkey Forest
Be aware and look for your belongings. Here, in Bangsal, Pamenang, and close to the pier that will take you to the Gilis, is the famous Monkey Forest of Lombok.
6) Kuta – Lombok
Differently from Kuta of Bali, Kuta in Lombok, although being the second touristy spot in Lombok after Senggigi, it worth a visit, for it’s beautiful beaches and amazing landscape.
7) Mawun Beach
One of the most beautiful beaches in Lombok is the famous Mawun Beach. Located in the south of Lombok island, it’s really worth for a visit.
There’s much more to see in Lombok, but here goes the main attractions for a relaxed quick visit to the Island.
